Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday met his Australian counterpart Penny Wong in Japan's Tokyo when they discussed further steps needed to intensify bilateral ties between the two nations.

The two leaders talked about further expanding bilateral relationships in fields including security, trade and education.

Following the meeting, S Jaishankar posted on X: "Also discussed deepening our practical cooperation across the Indo-Pacific."

He said: "Look forward to continuing this at the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting shortly. "

Jaishankar and Wong are currently visiting Japan to attend the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting which will be held on July 29.

"The Ministers will take forward discussions held during the last meeting in New York in September 2023 and exchange views on developments in the Indo-Pacific region, and review progress on Quad initiatives and working groups," read a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Ministers would discuss regional and international issues, and guide future collaboration to achieve the shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific region by addressing contemporary priorities of the region through delivery of public goods.

This was the first meeting between Jaishankar and Blinken since the Indian politician and former diplomat was re-appointed as Minister of External Affairs.
