PM Modi receives award in Bangladesh on behalf of Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Dhaka, June 7 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Bangladesh, on Sunday received award of Bangladesh Liberation War on behalf of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
"PM @narendramodi accepting Bangladesh Liberation War Honour on behalf of former PM Vajpayee," Ministry of External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted on Sunday.
Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was also present at the occasion.
Speaking at the award function, Hasina said, "A friend is honoured. As a politician Sh Vajpayee ' s unstinting support to Bangladesh played an important role in mobilising support for r cause."
Speaking at the ceremony, Modi said: "Every Indian wanted the dream of an independent Bangladesh 2 be realised."
Modi said this day is a matter of pride for the people of India.
He said, "it is an inspiration for so many people like me, Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee is being honoured by Bangladesh."
"Had Atalji's health permitted and he was present here, this occasion would be very different," said he.
Modi received the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour from President Abdul Hamid on behalf of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi, who is visiting Bangladesh for the first time, offered prayers at the 12th century Dhakeshwari temple in the Lalbagh area in Dhaka.
"An early morning temple visit. PM @narendramodi worships at the Sree Sree Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka," Ministry of External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted on Sunday.
He also visited the Ramakrishna Mission in Bangladesh.
"Last month in Kolkata. This month in Dhaka. PM visits Ramakrishna Mission in Bangladesh," Swarup posted.
Following these visits, PM Modi inaugurated the newly-constructed Indian High Commission's Chancery at Baridhara.
"Sowing seeds for the future. PM @narendramodi plants a sapling at the new High Commission Chancery Complex," The MEA spokesperson wrote.
Reaching out to Bangladesh directly, Modi inaugurated six projects undertaken with grant in aid and interacted with the beneficiaries.
Modi arrived in Dhaka on Saturday morning on a two-day visit to the country to settle a four-decade-old problem over the 4,096 km borderline between the two countries by finalising a landmark agreement apart from signing few key pacts.
His visit concludes on Sunday.
