Muslims offering Namaz in Gurgaon face disruption over row relating to prayer sites

| @indiablooms | Oct 23, 2021, at 04:20 am

Gurgaon/IBNS: Muslims 'peacefully' offering Namaz at a mosque in Gurgaon Sector 12-A on Friday faced trouble after a group of Bajrang Dal workers shouted 'Jai Shri Ram' slogans at them, locals told mediapersons.

The incident underlines the growing tension in the area over this issue.

Similarly tense scenes were witnessed in Sector 47 (a more urban area), where namaz offered outdoors on government-owned land.

There were protests and demands that it stop or move indoors.

It was only after the police offered assurances that the crowd dispersed.

A video showed dozens of cops standing guard behind a few metal barricades holding back a protesting crowd shouting 'Jai Shri Ram' slogans.

The 'assurances' relate to a dispute over where Muslims can offer their daily prayers, the practice of which is guaranteed by the Constitution as part of the right to freedom of religion.

In both cases - Sector 47 and Sector 12-A - the namaz sites were part of 37 spots identified by the Gurgaon district administration 'allowing' the Muslims to offer prayers.
