Modi govt likely to re-promulgate land ordinance for fourth time?
New Delhi, July 19 (IBNS): Facing stern opposition, the Narendra Modi government is likely to promulgate the land ordinance for the fourth time after conclusion of Parliament's Monsoon session, media reports said.
"The Joint Committee of Parliament headed by Bharatiya Janata party MP SS Ahluwalia, which is looking into the contentious legislation, meanwhile plans to seek a two-week extension till August 3 to finalise its report," a CNN-IBN report said.
The panel is highly unlikely to come out with its report during the Monsoon session of the Parliament and could seek further extension.
This might also leave the government with no option but to re-promulgate the ordinance once again.
The ordinance was promulgated for the third time on May 31.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had given its approval to amend the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Ordinance, 2015.
Changes in the provisions of the Act will facilitate farmers to get better compensation and rehabilitation and resettlement benefits in lieu ofland compulsorily acquired by the appropriate Government, the Centre claimed.
The government had promulgated ordinance thrice on the bill since December after it faced continuous resistance especially in Rajya Sabha, where it does not have the numbers.
The Government had to bow to the opposition demand to refer it to the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
