Kejriwal marches to PM Modi's residence over E20 petrol, alleges 'Trump pressure' behind policy

Kejriwal, accompanied by around 100 supporters, marched to submit petitions opposing the rollout of E20 fuel.

The former Delhi Chief Minister claimed he submitted petitions signed by 2.33 lakh people who had allegedly suffered due to the use of E20 petrol.

Kejriwal targets Centre over E20 policy

Addressing reporters during the march, Kejriwal alleged that the Centre was promoting E20 petrol under foreign pressure.

"Prime Minister Modi, do not impose E20 on the country under pressure from Trump. Stop buying ethanol from America," the AAP chief said.

He further claimed: "Millions of people are troubled by the forcibly imposed E20 of Prime Minister Modi ji. Today the country is demanding answers, and Prime Minister ji will have to respond."

What is E20 petrol?

E20 is a fuel blend comprising 20 percent ethanol and 80 percent petrol.

The Centre has been promoting it as part of its strategy to reduce crude oil imports, lower carbon emissions and boost farmers' incomes by increasing ethanol production.

Why has E20 sparked controversy?

The rollout of E20 has triggered concerns on several fronts:

Vehicle compatibility: Many older cars, two-wheelers and small engines are not designed to run on E20. Experts and automobile manufacturers have warned that prolonged use in incompatible vehicles could affect engine components and fuel systems.

Lower fuel efficiency: Since ethanol has lower energy content than petrol, vehicles running on E20 may experience a slight reduction in mileage.

Consumer concerns: Owners of older vehicles fear they may have to bear higher maintenance costs or replace their vehicles sooner than expected.

Food versus fuel debate: Critics argue that increasing ethanol production from crops such as sugarcane could divert agricultural resources from food production and strain water resources.

Infrastructure challenges: Oil companies, fuel stations and automakers have had to upgrade infrastructure and accelerate the rollout of E20-compatible vehicles.

Government's position

• The Centre has defended the move, saying E20 fuel:
• Reduces India's dependence on imported crude oil.
• Lowers greenhouse gas and tailpipe emissions.
• Creates additional income opportunities for farmers through increased ethanol demand.
• Supports India's broader clean energy and energy security goals.
• The government has also stated that most newly manufactured petrol vehicles are E20-compatible.

Current status

E20 petrol is being introduced in phases across the country, with oil marketing companies steadily expanding its availability.

Vehicle owners, especially those with older models, have been advised to check their manufacturers' recommendations before regularly using E20 fuel.
