Srinagar, July 14 (IBNS): Some alleged terrorists on Tuesday shot the deputy sarpanch of a village in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district leaving him critically injured.

The victim, identified as Muhammad Yaqoob Malla of Pehlepora village, in Shopian was shot by some terrorists on Tuesday afternoon.

He is currently undergoing specialised treatment.

According to reports, Malla's condition is critical.

Security forces have launched a search operation to nab the terrorists.

No terrorist outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

This was the second attack on Malla's life.

Terrorists had earlier attacked his house two years ago, injuring his brother.

A village head was shot dead by suspected militants at  Wagum village in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on July 1.

In April last the state government had said that  10 sarpanches have been killed and three injured by militants in the valley in the last four years while  20 have resigned following threats from militant outfits.
