New Delhi, May 10 (IBNS) The Delhi government has triggered a controversy for issuing a circular threatening action against media for any 'defamatory news'.

The circular has been issued by the Directorate of Information and Publicity Department on May 6.

The Congress attacked the Aam Aadmi Party-led government over the issue as party leader Ajay Maken tweeted: "Kejriwal's latest threat and gag order is- 'VIRTUAL CENSORSHIP'."

BJP leader  Nalin Kohli told media: " This circular indicates that Kejriwal's government is a bundle of contradictions."

The government has directed its officials to s to lodge a complaint with the principal secretary (Home) in case they find a news item is damaging the reputation of the chief minister or the government.

"Principal Secretary (Home) will examine the matter and will also seek the opinion of the Director (Prosecution)  as to whether the prosecution under section 499/500 IPC is to be launched," read the circular.
