Assam flood : Over 5.76 lakh affects, hits Kaziranga National Park

Guwahati, Aug 21 (IBNS): Assam flood situation turned grim after flood waters submerged more areas on Friday affecting more than 5.76 lakh people of 19 districts of the state.

Following incessant rains in past few days across the state, water level of Brahmaputra river and its tributaries crossed danger level mark in many places.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its report that a total of 5,76,537 persons of 1,071 villages in 19 districts are affected in the flood.

More than 3.50 lakh people affected alone in three lower Assam districts of Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Dhubri.

On Friday, flood waters inundated 460 villages in six districts.

A total of 1,22,322 inmates took shelter in 177 relief camps which set up by district administration.

Flood waters washed away more than 100 roads, embankment, bridges in flood hit districts.

Flood situation is worsened in Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Dhemaji, Chirang, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivsagar, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Barpeta, Golaghat, Morigaon, Nagaon, Kamrup, Goalpara, Darrang districts.

Indian army continued their flood relief operations in lower Assam providing succor to more than 2,500 people since last night.

Defence spokesman based in Guwahati said that the army has till now launched six columns (each column consisting of one office, two JCO's, 35 other ranks along with boat assaults universal type with on board motor, life jackets and other flood relief stores) in the flood hit districts Kokrajhar, Chirang and Bongaigaon.

On other hand flood waters inundated 27 anti-poaching camps in Kaziranga National Park (KNP).

Wild animals including one horned rhino, buffalo of the park had took shelter in higher lands.

"We have taken necessary steps to protect wild animals from poachers after many animals had crossed NH-37 and entered in nearest Karbi Anglong hill areas, " an official of KNP said.
