Assam flood : Five more killed, death toll touches 40

Guwahati, Sept 6 (IBNS) : Floods in Assam claimed five more lives on Sunday as death toll touched 40 and affected more than 1.7 million people in 20 districts of the state.

According to the reports of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), at least five people lost their lives on Sunday.

“Two people died each in Morigaon and Goalpara district and one in Nalbari district,” the ASDMA report said.

Over 1.7 million people of 1880 villages in 20 districts are affected in the flood which turned more critical following incessant rains in the state in past few days.

Flood waters submerged 1,11,061 hectors crop area in the flood hit districts.

The ASDMA said in its report that 17,67,159 people of Dhemaji, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Sonitpur, Barpeta, Morigaon, Cachar, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Darrang, Nalbari, Kamrup, Dibrugarh, Sivsagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Dhubri, Kamrup (Metro) and Goalpara districts have been affected.

Water levels of Brahmaputra have been flowing over danger lavel mark at Nematighat in Jorhat district, Tezpur in Sonitpur district, Guwahati in Kamrup (Metro) district, Goalpara and Dhubri.

On other hand, an one horned rhino was died after drawn in flood waters in Kaziranga National Park (KNP).

Forest guards had found the carcass of a female rhino inside the park under Burhapahar forest range on Sunday morning.

Flood waters inundated more than 80% areas in the national park.
