India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top: Trump says praising Modi during Egypt Summit on Gaza

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “very good friend,” while addressing a summit on the Gaza conflict in Egypt.

Trump’s remarks came amid reports of strain in Washington–New Delhi ties following the recent U.S. decision to impose additional tariffs on Indian goods.

“India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top — he’s done a fantastic job,” Trump said, with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif standing behind him on the dais. “I think Pakistan and India are going to live very nicely together,” he added, prompting a chuckle from Sharif.

According to Pakistan’s Dawn News, Trump thanked Sharif and Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, for their role in facilitating the Gaza ceasefire.

During the session, Sharif told the gathering that Pakistan had nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his “extraordinary contributions” in brokering peace efforts.

“President Trump helped stop the war between India and Pakistan and achieved a ceasefire with his wonderful team,” Sharif was quoted as saying. “Today again, I nominate this great president for the Nobel Peace Prize because he has not only brought peace in South Asia, saving millions of lives, but also achieved peace in Gaza.”

Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for stopping seven wars across the world, including the India–Pakistan conflict — a claim India has publicly denied.

Earlier on Monday, Trump visited Israel before flying to Egypt for the Gaza summit.

Hamas, on the same day, released all 20 remaining living hostages as part of a truce agreement.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the release of the hostages, describing it as a “tribute to the courage of their families,” and praised the peace efforts of President Donald Trump and the resolve of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Modi also expressed support for Trump’s “sincere efforts” to promote stability in the Middle East.
