'We’re leaving!': New York City’s wealthy plot escape as Mamdani predicted to win Mayoral poll
New York/IBNS: In a major shift in the New York city, nearly one million residents, mostly wealthy, are planning to shift as Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani is surging ahead in the Mayoral elections, media reports said.
As per a recent poll conducted by J.L. Partners for Daily Mail, almost one million New Yorkers are planning to move out of the city.
In a poll which was conducted on October 23-26, nine percent of 500 registered voters said they would "definitely" leave the city while 25 percent are considering the exit option.
If the poll presents the overall scenario exactly, then it is set to be one of the massive wipeouts in the history of America.
People who are mulling a way out are anticipating the strain on the New York economy due to Mamdani's policies.
Many believe Mamdani's promise to extend free healthcare and public services will have an impact on the economy in the long run.
Experts have pointed out that the growing anxiety among the city residents is causing a major change in the real estate market.
New York realtor Jay Batra told Daily Mail that several, who are not "thrilled about the possibility of Mamdani winning", have reworked their plan of buying costly apartments and aiming to settle for cheaper ones.
Real estate brokers in Connecticut's Greenwich and Westchester get a deja vu moment as the current scenario reminds them of the pandemic phase when the residents used to leave the city.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist inspired by Bernie Sanders, is in favour of free city bus rides, rent freezes, city-owned groceries, and a $30 minimum wage by 2030.
He led efforts for fare-free buses and congestion pricing. On Israel-Palestine, he backs BDS, opposes illegal settlements, and calls for Gaza ceasefires, while rejecting antisemitism and supporting Israel's right to exist.
He also champions anti-discrimination laws and protests funding cuts to gender-affirming care.
Looking to become the first Muslim, Indian-origin New York Mayor, Mamdani is the son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair.
A self-declared activist, the 33-year-old is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America Party.
A member of the New York state assembly, Mamdani, who was largely unknown to the NYC residents until he announced his candidature, secured 43.5% votes as opposed to Cuomo's 36.4% to win the mayoral primary in July this year.
Married to Syrian-American artist Rama Duwaji, the Democratic nominee managed to upset a heavyweight like Cuomo by a sizable margin banking on promises like affordable living cost for the residents, free bus rides, free child care, affordable housing et al at the cost of increasing corporate taxes.
