USA: Amtrak train, freight train crash in South Carolina, 2 die

New York, Feb 4 (IBNS): At least two people were killed and 50 others were injured after a Amtrak train en route from New York to Miami collided with a CSX freight train and derailed near Columbia, South Carolina, on Sunday media reports said.

According to reports, 147 people were present in the train when the mishap occurred.

Lexington Sheriff tweeted: "Two fatalities in passenger train versus freight train. @CountyLex EMS has transported more than 50 injured. #LESM #LCSDnews."

Amtrak said in a statement that the mishap occurred at around 2.35 am.

"The lead engine derailed, as well as some passenger cars. There were 8 crew members and approximately 139 passengers, with injuries reported. Local authorities are on the scene responding," read a statement issued by Amtrak.

Derek Pettaway was a passenger in one of the train's rear cars, headed for Orlando, told CNN: "I think people were more in shock than anything else."

An investigation nto the incident has been launched by the National Transportation Safety Board.
