TTP strikes escalate: Pakistan faces growing militant threat

According to reports, the spike in attacks has been most pronounced in tribal regions and border areas.

Recent security assessments published on Sunday indicate that militant attacks against Pakistani security forces and civilians have risen by nearly 70 percent nationwide, Afghanistan-based Khaama Press reported.

Security analysts cited in the reports said the TTP has emerged as one of Pakistan’s most serious internal security threats, particularly in the former tribal districts along the Afghanistan border. The security situation has been further complicated by growing unrest in Balochistan, the report added.

The reports also warned that some militant factions are benefiting from cross-border sanctuaries and alleged foreign backing, raising concerns about wider regional destabilisation, according to Khaama Press.

What is Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)?

According to the United Nations, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistan Taliban, is an alliance of previously disparate militant groups that came together in 2007 following Pakistani military operations against Al-Qaida-linked militants in the then Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

The group was formed under the leadership of Baitullah Mehsud, who has since been killed, and is primarily rooted along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. Estimates suggest the TTP has between 30,000 and 35,000 members.

The TTP’s stated objective is to overthrow Pakistan’s elected government and establish an emirate based on its interpretation of Islamic law. To achieve this, the group has carried out attacks on the Pakistani military and assassinated political figures in an effort to destabilise the country, the UN said.
