A Hindu man was crushed to death after he tried to stop a vehicle that was trying to leave a petrol pump in Bangladesh's Rajbari district without paying the fuel price, media reports said.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Ripon Saha.

He is the son of Pabitra Saha of Sahapara in Rajbari’s Sadar upazila.

Speaking to The Daily Star, Khondkar Ziaur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Rajbari Sadar Police Station said police seized the vehicle and arrested its owner, Abul Hashem alias Sujan, 55, from his residence in Baro Muraripur village of the upazila on Friday afternoon.

The driver, Kamal Hossain, 43, was also detained from Banibhah Nijpara village, said the police official.

Police said  Hashem, who is a contractor by profession, is a former treasurer of Rajbari district BNP and former president of the district Jubo Dal.

There has been a spike in atrocities against Hindus in the Muslim-majority country.

Legal proceedingsa re currently underway against both the owner of the vehicle and the driver.
