Trump shares altered map depicting US Control Over Canada, Greenland, Venezuela

US President Donald Trump sparked international backlash on Tuesday by posting an altered image on Truth Social that showed the American flag draped over Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela as expanded US territory.

The altered photo modifies an original White House image from August 18, 2025, capturing Trump with European leaders during a Ukraine war discussion.

Those leaders included UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

In the original, a map of Ukraine appeared in the meeting room; the edited version replaces it with a North American map marking Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela as US territories.

A second doctored image depicts Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Senator Marco Rubio planting a US flag in Greenland labelled "US Territory Est. 2026"

The post revives Trump's past comments on annexing Greenland for national security against Russia or China, including threats of force against Denmark.

It also echoes his suggestions that Canada become the 51st state, which was flatly rejected by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and ties into US tariff pressures on Venezuela amid hemispheric tensions.

Reactions on Instagram and X criticised the move as reckless, potentially straining NATO relations and aiding adversaries' propaganda.
