Trump pressed Norway’s finance minister Jens Stoltenberg on Nobel Peace Prize during tariffs call: Report

Washington,DC/Oslo: US President Donald Trump unexpectedly phoned Norway’s Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg last month, telling him he wanted the Nobel Peace Prize while also raising the topic of tariffs, Norwegian business daily Dagens Næringsliv reported on Thursday.

The paper, citing unnamed sources, said the call came “out of the blue” while Stoltenberg was walking down a street in Oslo.

Trump has been nominated for the award by several countries—including Israel, Pakistan, and Cambodia—for mediating peace agreements or ceasefires. He has publicly said he deserves the honour, which has been awarded to four former US presidents.

Speaking to Reuters, Stoltenberg confirmed that the call was about tariffs and economic cooperation ahead of Trump’s scheduled conversation with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Stoere.

“I will not go into further detail about the content of the conversation,” he said, adding that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer were among the officials on the line.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually by the five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee, appointed by Norway’s parliament in line with the will of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel. Hundreds of nominees are considered each year.
