Trump demands compensation from Iran, cites decades of attacks and deaths

US President Donald Trump has demanded that Iran pay compensation for deaths, injuries and attacks allegedly linked to the Islamic Republic, saying the issue could form part of any future peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Trump made the remarks in a post on his Truth Social platform, responding to Iran's reported demand for compensation for damage caused during the five-month conflict.

'Now I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran'

Trump said he found the idea of Iran seeking compensation "interesting", but argued that Washington should make a similar demand.

"The compensation that Iran has been demanding was never mentioned in the negotiations with the US," Trump said.

He added that he would now seek compensation from Iran for people who had been killed or seriously wounded in attacks and conflicts allegedly backed by Tehran.

"...It is an interesting idea because now I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran, for all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts," Trump wrote.

Trump specifically referred to attacks allegedly associated with Iran-backed forces and invoked the role of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad in January 2020.

USS Cole victims, protesters among those cited

Trump said his compensation demand would include families of those killed in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, as well as what he described as "thousands of others" killed in combat.

He also called for compensation to be paid to families of protesters killed during public uprisings in Iran over the past five decades.

Trump further claimed that compensation should cover what he described as 52,000 people killed during the past five months.

The president did not provide a detailed mechanism for calculating the compensation or explain how such payments would be incorporated into a future agreement with Tehran.

Compensation emerges as potential hurdle

Trump's comments come as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high, with compensation potentially emerging as another contentious issue in any effort to negotiate a lasting settlement.

Iran has previously demanded compensation for damage caused by US military action and sanctions, while Washington has repeatedly accused Tehran of supporting armed groups and carrying out or sponsoring attacks across the region.

Trump's latest statement signals that any future peace negotiations could involve competing financial claims from both sides, potentially adding another layer of complexity to efforts to reach an agreement.
