Washington/UNI: At least six people were killed and 13 sustained injuries when a fire broke out in an apartment in the American city of Las Vegas.

"In what is believed to be the city's worst fatal fire in history, six people lost their lives and 13 people were injured when the Alphine Apartments Motel, 213 N.Ninth., caught fire at 4:13 a.m. [GMT 12:13 PM] Saturday - Dec. 21," the department said in a statement.

When the firefighters arrived at the three-story wood frame building with 42 apartments, several people were hanging out of windows, along with thick black smoke billowing out.

A few people jumped as firefighters arrived at the spot.

At least 10 additional ambulances were deployed to take the injured to hospitals.

Two cats and one dog were also found dead in the building.

Around 23 people were displaced due to the tragedy.
