Iraqi Kurdish leader seeks US support to resettle one million victims of Islamic State : Pence

Washington, Apr 25 (Sputnik/UNI) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government appealed for continued US support to return more that 1 million Iraqis displaced by the Islamic State terror group (banned in Russia) during a telephone conversation with Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday, according to a readout of the conversation.

"Prime Minister Barzani provided Vice President Pence an update on the security situation in Iraq’s disputed territories and underscored the importance of continued US support to stabilize these areas and allow for the return of more than one million Iraqis who remain displaced following the defeat of the ISIS [Islamic State] caliphate," the readout stated.

Pence also commended the Kurdistan Regional Government for providing refuge for religious minorities facing genocide by Islamic State fighters, the readout said.

The Islamic State is accused of executing a large number of religious minorities, including Christians and Yazidis, after seizing much of Iraq - as well as Syria - in 2014 and creating a pseudo state that lasted until defeat by a US-led coalition in 2018.
