A 47-year-old man has been charged with the alleged murder of an Indian-origin man in the British city of Derby.

The deceased Indian person was identified as 37-year-old Gurvinder Johal.

He was stabbed to death inside a bank in Derby.

"We were called to reports that a man had been stabbed in the Lloyd’s bank branch in St Peter’s Street, Derby, at around 2.35pm on Tuesday 6 May," Derbyshire Police said in a statement.

Johal, who was 37, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The charged person was identified as Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur (47).

The 47-year-old, of Western Road, Normanton, Derby, was remanded in police custody and appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court this morning (8 May), police said in the statement.

Police said a second man in his 30s, who was arrested in connection with the incident, has been released without any further action.

Samanatha Shallow, deputy chief crown prosecutor in the East Midlands, told BBC: "Following a review of the evidence provided by Derbyshire Constabulary, we have authorised criminal charges in relation to the death of 37-year-old Gurvinder Johal."

Family Friend Describes Gurvinder Johal As "Good Friend'

A family friend, who described Johal as a 'good friend', said the deceased person had just arrived in Derby from a family trip to India.

Supt Rebecca Webster, from Derbyshire Police, told BBC: "For the family of the victim, we know that life will never be the same again, and our thoughts are with them as they begin to deal with their tragic loss."
