Greek parliament votes to legalises same-sex marriage

Greece has become the first Christian Orthodox-majority nation to legalise same-sex marriage, media reports said on Friday.

Following voting in the parliament, same-sex couples could now adopt children legally.

The parliament adopted the bill by 176-76 voting on Thursday.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the new law would "boldly abolish a serious inequality", reported BBC.

Church's protest

The country's orthodox church has led the resistance against the move.

According to reports, supporters belonging to the group held a protest rally in Athens.

During the protest, several protesters displayed banners, held crosses, read prayers and sang passages from the Bible in Syntagma Square of the capital city.

Fifteen of the European Union's 27 members have so far legalised same-sex marriage.

Across the world, 35 nations permit it.
