Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says he vetoed bill that would ban social media for children under 16

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he vetoed a bill that would have banned social media for children under the age of 16.

"I have vetoed HB 1 because the Legislature is about to produce a different, superior bill," DeSantis said in a statement on Friday regarding the Online Protections for Minors bill.

DeSantis explained that protecting children from harm linked to social media is important, but so is supporting parents’ rights and maintaining the ability of adults to engage in anonymous speech.

The Governor said he anticipates the new bill will recognize these priorities and will be signed into law soon.
