Damascus/Xinhua: A Russian officer was killed and two soldiers were wounded on Tuesday by an explosion in eastern Syria, state news agency SANA reported.

The explosion was caused by an explosive device that ripped through a military convoy in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, said SANA, citing a military source.

The military convoy had just been returning to Deir al-Zour when the explosive device went off, it added.

It said the Russian convoy was conducting "humanitarian operation" in the area.
