Ottawa/IBNS: Canadians have suffered a loss of more than $1.2 million in recent weeks to scammers, who had taken advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic, media reports said.

Out of 739 reports of attempts to defraud Canadians received by Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre since Mar 6 of with scams related to the pandemic, 178 of those attempts succeeded, said Jeff Thomson, a senior RCMP intelligence analyst with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

These scammers also used the pandemic as cover to infect computers with malware.

The messages received by the victims of one such scheme tells them they've been exposed to someone who has tested positive for Covid-19 and asks them to fill out a form resembling an Excel form.

The moment users click to view the form and its contents, their computers get infected.
