Canadian PM's wife reacts to her picture with Atwal, calls it 'shocking'

Ottawa, Mar 7 (IBNS): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's wife Sophie Trudeau said she was shocked to know that she was  seen in a picture with convicted Khalistani terrorist Jaspal Atwal during her recent India visit with her husband, media reports said.

n a picture from Trudeau's meet with Bollywood celebrities during his India visit, Atwal was seen in a picture with Sophie Gregoire Trudeau.

In an interview with CTV News, Sophie said: "When we stand in a photo line or when people come up to ask [for] pictures, it’s always a moment where I remind myself, it is their moment, and it is my moment because these people are showing me trust and confidence."

She added, "So I stand there with all my presence and I take a picture with pleasure, then something shocking comes along. That's life, right?"

Atwal was convicted in Canada for attempting the murder of then-Punjab minister Malkiat Singh Sidhu on Vancouver Island in 1986.

Atwal's invitation to the dinner hosted by the Canadian High Commissioner in India came as an embarrassment for Trudeau as he had ensured Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh of Canada's distance from all those who are allegedly involved with the Sikh separatist movement.

Trudeau later said he will take actions against all who want the Indian state of Punjab to be a separate country, named Khalistan.

As a damage control, the invitation to Atwal was later rescinded.
