Canada: Toronto shooting leaves 1 dead, 13 hurt

Toronto, July 23 (IBNS): At least one person was killed and 13 others hurt as a gunman opened fire on a busy avenue in the Canadian city of Toronto on Sunday night, officials said on Monday.

The incident occurred in the Canadian city's Greektown district.

Speaking to reporters, Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said that the shooter is dead.

He said that the perpetrator used a handgun.

According to media reports, the gunman succumbed after shooting himself.

The Toronto Police tweeted: "Toronto Police Chief Saunders has updated media from scene. 14 victims were shot with a handgun. 1 female adult has died. 1 young girl in critical condition. Suspect is dead (not included in 14 victim total) Witnesses call 416-808-2222 Anonymous tips 1-800-222-8477 #GO1341286 ^sm."

The injured people were rushed to a hospital for treatment.

The motive of the attack is still not clear.

Politicians condemn attack:

Toronto Mayor John Tory tweeted: " This is a tragedy and on behalf of all Toronto residents, we are extending our prayers to all the innocent people attacked tonight, their families and their friends."

He asked people to not to reach any conclusion until the police complete its investigation into the matter.

"I have talked to @TorontoPolice Chief @marksaunderstps tonight at the scene & I have been assured police are investigating exactly what happened and why. I would ask people not to draw any conclusions until we have more information from the police," he said.

The premier of the province of Ontario, Doug Ford, posted: "My heart goes out to the victims and loved ones of the horrific act of gun violence in Toronto. Thank you to all the first responders for acting quickly to help everyone affected."
