Canada: Tim Hortons apologises for not giving proceeds from 'Humboldt Broncos doughnuts' to hockey team

Ottawa, Apr 10 (IBNS): Canadian fast food restaurant Tim Hortons Tuesday apologised for not giving the proceeds from specially made doughnuts in the colour of hockey team Humboldt Broncos to the team, which suffered a bus accident last week, media reports said.

A Halifax-area franchise sold the doughnuts without donating the proceeds.

Tim Hortons' statement of apology has been quoted by The Globe and Mail, "Of course, this restaurant will be donating 100 per cent of proceeds from this doughnut to the Humboldt Broncos Hockey Club and we apologize for the misunderstanding."

In order to share solidarity with Humboldt Broncos, Tim Hortons decided to sell doughnuts with white frosting and green-and-yellow sprinkles- the colour of the hockey team- to donate the proceeds.

In a statement, Tim Hortons stated, "Together with our Restaurant Owners, Tim Hortons sends its thoughts and prayers to the Humboldt Broncos, their families and the entire community impacted by this unimaginable tragedy. To help support those affected, Tim Hortons is making a donation of $50,000 to the Humboldt Broncos Hockey Club."

Fifteen people including Haugan have been killed as a bus carrying the junior hockey team crashed with a truck in Saskatchewan highway Friday.

The victims include players Adam Herold, Connor Lukan, Evan Thomas, Jacob Leicht, Jaxon Joseph, Logan Boulet, Logan Hunter, Logan Schatz, Stephen Wack, Xavier Labelle, team personnel Brody Hinz, Darcy Haugan, Glen Doerksen, Mark Cross and Tyler Beiber.

The team was on its way to Game 5 of a semi-final against the Nipawin Hawks, also in Saskatchewan, when the crash occurred around 5 pm Friday.

In a statement, the RCMP said, “The Coroner’s Office and the RCMP want to extend their deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost their lives as well as those who were in the collision.”

Condolences poured in from every part of the country.

A visibly distraught president of Humboldt Broncos, Kevin Gringer, said that “it would be hard to process everything that has taken place over these last few days.”

He thanked the first responders and the medical personnel who stood by the injured at their hour of need.
