Canada: Mississauga Mayor to run for Ontario Liberal leader, registers with Elections Ontario

| @indiablooms | Jun 15, 2023, at 03:25 am

Mississauga/IBNS: Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie has officially registered to run for leader of the Ontario Liberal Party.

The news comes less than a month after Crombie announced she was forming an “exploratory committee” to consider entering the race.

One of four people with their names officially in the race to helm the struggling political party, Crombie officially registered with Elections Ontario on Tuesday.

So far, Liberal MPs Nathaniel Erskine-Smith and Yasir Naqvi, as well as Liberal MPP Ted Hsu, have officially declared their candidacy for the provincial party's leadership.

She is expected to make a “special” announcement on Wednesday evening.

The mayor is scheduled to take part in "A Special Event with Bonnie Crombie," to be held at recording studio and event space Metalworks Institute on Wednesday, June 14 at 4:30 p.m.

According to the event page, the afternoon will include community members and Ontario Liberals who support Crombie.

Having been a mayor of Mississauga since 2014, she recently celebrated her victory in the 2022 municipal elections at Metalworks with around 78 percent of the vote in the mayoral race and said she would step down if elected as Ontario Liberal leader.
