Canada: Liberals rejecting Senate amendments to impaired driving bill

| @indiablooms | Jun 20, 2018, at 02:00 pm

Ottawa, Jun 20 (IBNS): The Liberals are not accepting the amendments brought by the Senate to the impaired driving bill, media reports said.

The amendments have been brought to Bill C-46.

Bill C-46 will accompany Bill C-45, which will legalise recreational marijuana in the country.

The bill, as it was introduced, attempts to change impaired driving laws.

The law would give police the power to carry out roadside intoxication tests.

The Senate has amended to do away with the provision.

Also the Senate has amended the down-gradation of the criminal offences of impaired driving.

The amendments were passed by the Senate last week.

Stating its position, the government has said that it "respectfully disagrees” with the changes.

Hoping for the acceptance of the government's version of Bill C-46, House leader Bardish Chagger said: "C-45 is now returning to the Senate. C-45 and 46 work closely together, so we’d like to see them both moving together.”

Chagger has been quoted by CTV News.
