Canada Foreign Affairs minister Freeland flying to Washington, NAFTA talks on hold

Ottawa, Apr 5 (IBNS): The eighth round of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) talks have been put on hold as Canadian Foreign Affairs minister Chrystia Freeland is flying off to Washington, the capital of the US, to engage into political discussions with American and Mexican leaders, media reports said.

CBC News reported that there is no possibility of a negotiation on NAFTA though the US expects the eighth round of talks by Sunday.

Though there was no formal announcement, the talks might happen between Apr 8 and 18.

Emily Davis, a spokesperson for U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, has been quoted by CBC News, "The NAFTA countries have been negotiating continuously on ministerial and official levels since the last formal negotiating round ended in March."

The NAFTA is an agreement which came into force from January 1994 by Canada, Mexico and United States creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America.

Trump has alleged that the US faced severe losses in trade pacts with Canada and Mexico, the two partners of NAFTA deal.

For more than two years, US President Trump criticised the agreement and also hinted to take some serious steps being in the administration or at least send some ultimatums.

Trump reportedly wants the treaty to be more fair.

Both Canada and the US differ on the subject of climate change.
