Toronto, July 28 (IBNS): A fire at a hydro station in Toronto has left thousands of houses in the city without power, media reports said.

The explosion occurred at a hydro station in northwest Toronto.

Police said they received calls of an explosion at the station just past midnight on Saturday.

They said the power was shut down to take control over the fire.

Toronto Hydro had posted an update that around 7000 homes are affected due to the power cut.

It said: "Steeles/401/Kipling/Dufferin outage: there is no change in the outage affecting 7,000 customers. We’re still waiting to access the scene at the transformer station. It’s difficult to estimate how long power will be out, but it’s possible this will be prolonged. "

Toronto Hydro has also asked all customers to reduce their electricity usages to prevent overloading the system. "Steeles/401/Kipling/Dufferin outage: due to a fire at the local transformer station, we’ve had to reroute power from other areas. Customers are asked to reduce their electricity use to prevent overloading the system. This will help manage the situation until repairs are made."

However, according to reports, Toronto Hydro could not guarantee as to when the power supply can be resumed.
