Canada: Doug Ford to reduce Toronto council seats almost to half of its present number

Toronto, July 27 (IBNS): Ontario premier Doug Ford will slash the Toronto council seats to just more than half of its present number, media reports said.

The number is going to come down to 25 from present 47.

The report came on the eve of a deadline for candidate to register for the municipal election.

The municipal election is scheduled to be held on Oct 22.

Ford is likely to hold a press conference at 2 pm on Friday over the matter.

Report also said the Progressive Conservative (PC) government is likely to cancel planned elections for regional chair positions in two Greater Toronto Area communities, namely, Peel Region and York Region.

However, PC representatives did not respond to the development on Thursday.

Last month, the PC had swept the provincial election to end nearly 15 years of Liberal Party rule in Ontario.
