Dhaka: A man was caught by locals and handed over to the police as he was attempting to enter a Hindu puja pavilion in Bangladesh's Habiganj town with a Quran, media reports said.

The detainee is Mizan, son of late Shamsuzzaman from Luiatpur village in Begumganj of Noakhali, reports Dhaka Tribune.

“Police are questioning him to know details of his motive,” Dous Mohammad, officer-in-charge of Habiganj Sadar Model police station, told the newspaper.

During Durga Puja, attacks on several Hindu establishments, including puja pandals and temples, occurred, creating tension in the country.

The attacks were launched after a false claim of the desecration of the Quran by the Hindus at a Puja venue in Comilla spread like wildfire, reports Dhaka Tribune.

Police arrested Iqbal Hossain for placing the Quran in the pandal.
