Bangladesh: 27 people, including 25 students, die in jet crash

The death toll due to the Bangladesh Air Force training jet crash at a school in Dhaka's Uttara area has touched 27, media reports said on Tuesday.

Authorities confirmed that the deceased included 25 children, the pilot of the aircraft and a teacher.

78 people are undergoing treatment at different hospitals and five of them are in critical condition, Professor Md Sayedur Rahman, the chief adviser's special assistant for health and family welfare, was quoted as saying by The Daily Star during a press briefing at National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

"Among the deceased, 25 are children — many under the age of 12 — with extensive burn injuries. The other two victims include the aircraft's pilot and a female schoolteacher," Sayedur Rahman said.

He said twenty bodies have been handed over to their family members.

He said the condition of some of the patients remains critical.

According to reports, two teachers and the pilot of the Chinese-made jet died in the crash that occured around 1.30 pm.

The mishap occurred in Uttara region of Dhaka, close to the  Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The pilot who was flying the jet was identified as Flight Lieutenant Mohammed Toukir Islam.

Narendra Modi expresses sadness

Expressing sadness over the loss of lives in the aviation tragedy, Indian PM Narendra Modi wrote on X: " Deeply shocked and saddened at the loss of lives, many of them young students, in a tragic air crash in Dhaka. Our hearts go out to the bereaved families. We pray for the swift recovery of those injured. India stands in solidarity with Bangladesh and is ready to extend all possible support and assistance."
