51 Palestinian women from Gaza arrested by Israeli army

Ramallah/IBNS/UNI: Israeli forces arrested at least 51 Palestinian women from the Gaza Strip amid the ongoing war with Hamas, two groups said on Thursday.

The Palestine Liberation Organisation's Detainees and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Authority and the Palestinian Prisoners' Club said in a joint statement that the women were being held in Israel's Damon prison.

They said the detainees included an 82-year-old woman and several of her relatives.

The groups said the actual number of female detainees from Gaza was higher, but they only had clear data on those in Damon prison.

The statement said the women faced "torture and humiliation" and were detained in "tragic conditions" like all Gaza detainees.

It said Israel prevented lawyers from human rights organisations from visiting the detainees and learning about their situation, and it also denied access to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The statement said the Israeli Prisons Administration only disclosed that there were 661 Gaza detainees, whom it labelled as "unlawful combatants."
