Bucharest, Oct 31 (IBNS) Twenty-seven people were killed in a fire outbreak at a nightclub in Romania's capital city Bucharest, here on Friday, according to Government officials.

The officials further reported that almost 155 people were treated in the hospital with burns. The death toll is expected to rise.

Reports have also suggested that the fire may have been caused by activities inside the Colectiv club which was hosting a rock concert attended by an estimated 400 people.

Victor Ionescu, a witness, told local TV station Antena 3, "People were fainting, they were fainting from the smoke. It was total chaos, people were trampling on each other."

Calling it a 'personal tragedy', Romania's President Klaus Iohannis wrote on his official Facebook page, "Deeply grieved by the tragic events that happened this evening in downtown. It is a very sad day for all of us, for our nation and for me personally."

"In these moments, expressing my complete sympathy and solidarity with the families of those affected by this tragedy. We also assure you the families affected by this event-shattering the full support of all those involved in the rescue and ask them to trust that the agencies, make every effort to ensure the catastrophe is limited," Iohannis added.
