Taipei/UNI: US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday left Taiwan for South Korea after a brief stopover on the island.

Her aircraft departed from Taipei Songshan Airport at 6:01 pm (local time) to continue the rest of her Indo-Pacific trip that will take her to South Korea and Japan before heading back to the US, said a report by CNA.

During her 19-hour stay in Taipei, she met with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and also visited the legislature, and met Taiwan lawmakers.

"Our delegation had the distinct privilege of meeting with the President of Taiwan @Iingwen today," Pelosi tweeted.

"We discussed how America and Taiwan can deepen their economic ties, further strengthen security partnership & defend our shared democratic values," she added.

"It was also my high honor to receive from President @iingwen of Taiwan the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon: a symbol of our treasured friendship. Make no mistake: America remains unwavering in our commitment to the people of Taiwan– now & for decades to come," she said in another tweet.

She also visited the White Terror Memorial Park, where political prisoners were held during the decades of martial law under the former Kuomintang (KMT) regime, and met with human rights activists, CNA English News further reported.
