Ontario reports highest COVID-19 ICU admissions since start of pandemic

Ontario/IBNS: Ontario is reporting the highest number of COVID-19 patients admission to its intensive care units (ICU) ever since the beginning of the pandemic, said a government agency on Tuesday that tracks hospitalizations.

The province reported another 2,333 cases of the illness with over 421 patients with the virus in ICUs across the province, according to Critical Care Services Ontario (CCSO), which puts together daily internal reports for hospitals and health organizations.

The previous high of 420 admissions in ICU was reported in mid-January, during the peak of the second wave of the pandemic.

The latest data show that COVID-19 patients require, on average, about two weeks of critical care, according to the agency.

Some health-care providers in Ontario predict the third wave of the pandemic could be even worse than the second, and they’re urging people to stay home.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that with the rate at which the case count of Covid-19 patients is increasing during the third wave, he will not hesitate to introduce another lockdown in the province.
