Canada: Birthplace doesn't necessarily guarantee citizenship, federal govt tells SC

Ottawa, Sept 8 (IBNS): The federal government of Canada told the Supreme Court that birthplace doesn't necessarily be the only criteria to attain citizenship, media reports said.

The federal submission has been quoted by CTV News, "Indeed, no European countries, for example, grant an unqualified automatic citizenship by birth and they have no obligation to do so."

"Only 34 countries grant the automatic acquisition of citizenship through birthplace regardless of parents' nationality or status. This practice is not consistent and uniform enough to ground a rule of customary international law."

Earlier, the Conservatives had passed a policy resolution urging the government to end the prevailing process of attaining Canadian citizenship.

The Conservatives' resolution wanted to end birthright citizenship "unless one of the parents of the child born in Canada is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada", CTV News reported.

Conservative leader Andrew Scheer said one of the goals of the resolution is to stop women coming to Canada to give birth to enable their child to attain the country's citizenship.
