Canada Foreign Affairs Minister Freeland to be back at the US to negotiate NAFTA today

Ottawa/Washington, Aug 30 (IBNS): Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland is expected to be back at the US to negotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on Thursday, media reports said.

Freeland and her negotiating team are expected to negotiate at the US Trade Representative Office.

The negotiation is likely to begin on Thursday morning.

Earlier this week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he had a constructive conversation with US President Donald Trump over North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Both the leaders welcomed the progress in the US' negotiations with Mexico on NAFTA.

Canada has got some encouragement after Trump said his country is going to have a good deal with Mexico on NAFTA, media reports said.

Freeland earlier told media the news of an agreement between the US and Mexico is a "good news" for her country.

Freeland's spokesperson Adam Austen has been quoted by CTV News, "Canada is encouraged by the continued optimism shown by our negotiating partners."

"Progress between Mexico and the United States is a necessary requirement for any renewed NAFTA agreement.”

Trump on Monday said the prospects of a trade deal with Mexico is "looking good".

The US President tweeted to say, "A big deal looking good with Mexico!"

The two countries have been negotiating over trade excluding Canada.

NAFTA is an agreement which came into force from January 1994 by Canada, Mexico and United States creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America.

Trump had earlier alleged that the US faced severe losses in the trade pact with Canada and Mexico.

Austen said Canada will sign a new NAFTA only if it is good for the country and middle-class.

Canada is in regular touch with the US and Mexico over NAFTA-related issues, he said.
