Ottawa, May 11 (IBNS): Canadian minister Navedeep Bains was once asked to remove his turban at the US airport for security checking, media reports said.

The incident occurred a year ago.

Bains, who is the Minister of innovation, science and economic development, said he was asked to remove his turban at Detroit Airport while he coming back to Canada.

He said with the challenges with the swab machine, Bains was called back from the gate was brought to the security. Then he was asked to remove the turban.

Later after knowing his identity, Bains was allowed to go.

Remembering the incident, Bains said asking him to take off his turban is equivalent to ask him to remove clothes.

The minister has been quoted by The Times Of India, "I was very frustrated and disappointed that this occurred but ultimately I was allowed to fly."

"But it was because of who I was and that should not be the case. It doesn't matter what your status is and what your position is."

Canada had verbally protested against the incident and also received an apology.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister, Chrystia Freeland, told media that they wanted the US to be aware of Ottawa's concerns over the entire incident to protect the Canadians.

A turban is a kind of headgear which is worn by several men belonging to the Sikh community.
