Muslims in Quebec to get their own cemetery after two decades' wait

Quebec, Aug 7 (IBNS): After waiting for two decades, the Muslim community in the Quebec city is set to get their own cemetery, media reports said.

Muslims in the city were appealing to get their own cemetery for last two decades.

Mayor Régis Labeaume and members of the Muslim community informed about the plans to make their own cemetery at a press conference on Friday.

The cemetery will be made on an area of 6,000 square metres which will cost around $270,000 excluding taxes.

Despite two decades push, the Muslims in the Quebec city made a fresh appeal for the making of cemetery after completing payments for the city's main Mosque in 2011.

The announcement came three weeks after a zoning change proposal with an aim to set up a Muslim cemetery in Saint-Apollinaire, Quebec, was defeated in a referendum of 19-16.

Earlier, the deceased of the Muslim community were buried in Montreal or overseas.

The work for the proposed cemetery is expected to finish by the fall.

Speaking about the latest development, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted: "An important and courageous step for dignity and decency. Congratulations Mayor Labeaume for taking action."
