A Bangladesh court on Tuesday awarded the death sentence to 14 people who were convicted in a case involving an assassination attempt on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2000, reported Dhaka Tribune.

The convicted members, who were all members of banned militant outfit Harkat ul Jihad al Islami Bangladesh, had planted 76 kilograms of explosives in a ground Gopalganj district. At the time Sheikh Hasina, during her first term as the prime minister, was scheduled to address an election rally on the ground.

Sedition charges were brought against them in a fast-track tribunal. The verdict was announced on Monday in presence of the nine accused while remain five remained at large. The judge also ordered the execution of the sentence either by firing squad or by hanging.

However, the order also granted them permission to file review petitions in the high court within 30 days of the tribunal verdict. They were convicted of the charges on 11 March.
