Dhaka, Dec 31 (IBNS): Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is all set to rule the nation for the third straight time, on Monday said people voted her back to power as they have seen the development done under her government in the last two terms.

“The countrymen have gained benefit of the development work of my government, and thus they cast their votes for us,” she was quoted as saying by The Daily Star during her meeting with the foreign observers.

Hasina spoke to observers from 30 different countries during a view-exchange meeting at her official residence Gono Bhaban.

Amid reports of violence, Bangladesh voted to elect a new Prime Minister on Sunday.

Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League scripted a massive victory in the polls.

She came to power for the third straight term.

BNP demands re-elections:

Key opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party demanded a re-election.

The party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir spoke to media and demanded for re-election under a non-party caretaker government immediately.

CEC rules out re-election:

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda has ruled out any possibility of re-election as has been demanded by the opposition leaders.

“There is no scope to hold the national election again,” Huda was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.

Hasina and her 10 years:

Besides the economic progress of Bangladesh, Hasina was also applauded for acting tough after a deadly Islamic State attack in the capital Dhaka's diplomatic area in July 2016, claiming several lives.

She also earned accolades for sheltering hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims who fled there from neighbouring Myanmar.
