Iran deal: International sanctions lifted

India Blooms News Service | | 17 Jan 2016, 09:06 am
Washington, Jan 17 (IBNS): In a significant move, international sanction on Iran was lifted on Saturday after the International Atomic Energy Agency verified that the country has completed the necessary steps under the Iran deal which will ensure its nuclear program is and remains exclusively peaceful.

The US said it will begin lifting its nuclear-related sanctions on Iran.

In a statement, the White House said: "Because Iran has completed these steps, the U.S. and international community can begin the next phase under the JCPOA, which means the U.S. will begin lifting its nuclear-related sanctions on Iran. However, a number of U.S. sanctions authorities and designations will continue to remain in place."

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry tweeted: "Today marks the moment the #IranDeal has transitioned from ambitious promises on paper to measurable actions in practice. Each of the pathways #Iran had toward enough fissile material for a nuclear weapon has been verifiably closed down."

He said: "U.S. + EU will begin lifting nuclear-related sanctions, expanding the horizon of opportunity for the Iranian people."

Meanwhile, Director General Yukiyo Amano of the International Atomic Energy Agency said relationship between Iran and the IAEA has reached a new phase.

"Today, I released a report confirming that Iran has completed the necessary preparatory steps to start the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The report was submitted to the IAEA Board of Governors and to the United Nations Security Council," Yukiyo Amano  said in a statement.

"It was issued after Agency inspectors on the ground verified that Iran has carried out all measures required under the JCPOA to enable Implementation Day to occur," Amano said.
