Athens/UNI/Xinhua: Seven refugees, migrants lost their lives and another seven were injured in a car accident in northern Greece on Friday, Greek national news agency AMNA reported, citing local police.

The incident happened on the outskirts of Iasmos town near the land border with Turkey under still unclear circumstances, according to the report.

The nationalities of the dead and injured have not been clarified but authorities believed they were all victims of a smuggling network.

Similar incidents have been reported many times in recent years in northern Greece. Despite enhanced controls along the land and sea borders, irregular migration flows continue and thousands of migrants and refugees still enter Greece every year.

During the first 10 months this year, a total of 7,242 new arrivals were recorded by Greek authorities, according to data released by the Greek Migration and Asylum Ministry earlier this week.

Currently, 37,951 asylum seekers are accommodated in Greece's state-run facilities, while this year 9,794 individuals have been deported to their countries of origin or relocated to other countries, according to the ministry.

Since 2015 more than 1 million people have reached Greece and most continued the journey to other countries until the closure of the Balkan route in the winter of 2016. Since then, the number of arrivals has declined significantly.
