Abuja: As many as 300 Nigerian girls, who were abducted recently, have been freed, media reports said.

The girls were abducted by unidentified gunmen from their boarding school in Jangebe, Zamfara state, on Friday and taken to a forest, police earlier told BBC.

The region's governor confirmed their release with a tweet message.

Governor Bello Matawalle tweeted: "Alhamdulillah! It gladdens my heart to announce the release of the abducted students of GGSS Jangebe from captivity. This follows the scaling of several hurdles laid against our efforts. I enjoin all well-meaning Nigerians to rejoice with us as our daughters are now safe."

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari also welcomed the development and tweeted: "I join the affected families and the people of Zamfara State in welcoming and celebrating the release of the abducted students of GGSS Jangebe. This news bring overwhelming joy. I am pleased that their ordeal has come to a happy end without any incident."
