Seoul/UNI: South Korea confirmed the country's first fatality from the new Coronavirus on Thursday, while the total number of people infected by the deadly disease, recently named Covid-19, rose to 104.

South Korean health officials believe that the infections are linked to the virus.

According to the Korean Centre for Disease Control, the 61-year-old woman, who had tested positive for the virus earlier this week and died on Thursday, was yet not identified.

She had contact with 166 people, who were asked to self-quarantine, BBC quoted the Centre as saying.

A religious congregation at a local church - Shincheonji Church of Jesus has been identified as the reason why so many have been infected by Coronavirus.

Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin admitted that at least 90 more people, who attended Church services, were displaying symptoms similar to Covid-19.

Daegu authorities have ordered the shutdown of all kindergartens and spring semester timings are also likely to be rescheduled.

Korea's Defence Ministry banned troops stationed in Daegu from leaving their barracks and receiving guests.
