Veteran Bollywood actor Shabana Azmi and lyricist Javed Akhtar recently visited Kwegma village near Kohima, Nagaland, posting glimpses of their trip on social media.

Azmi posted photographs from the visit on Instagram, describing Kwegma as a “clean” and “community-driven” village located about 14 km from Kohima.

She also acknowledged the hospitality extended by locals and organisers, writing, “We were treated to some beautiful Naga folk dance and a delicious local meal."

Akhtar also shared his experience, expressing appreciation for the village and its surroundings, according to Northeast Live TV.

Kwegma, situated close to the popular trekking destination Dzukou Valley, is emerging as an eco-tourism hub.

The region is known for its natural landscapes and proximity to Khonoma, often referred to as Asia’s first “green village” for its conservation efforts.

During their visit, the couple interacted with local residents and attended cultural performances, underscoring the growing visibility of Northeast India as a tourism destination.

Their social media posts have drawn attention to Nagaland’s blend of tradition, sustainability and natural beauty, further boosting interest in the region among travellers.

The couple's trip featured a Creators’ Meet at RCEMPA in Jotsoma, where Akhtar launched a music IP hub, deeming Nagaland "fertile ground for music" due to its talented, simple people.

Azmi, on her first visit, shared career anecdotes with local artists, echoing Akhtar's Hornbill Festival tales.

They also met Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who hosted them and discussed promoting Northeast culture and tourism.
