People in Nepal commemorate cow festival

Kathmandu (Nepal), Aug 09 (ANI): The Gai Jatra or cow festival remembers those who have recently passed away and it involves children dressing up and marching in a procession. The children are also fed milk and given money as part of the festival. On the occasion, thousands of Nepali walked in procession through the Kathmandu valley to commemorate the dead. Relatives of the ones who died in 2015 devastating earthquake also joined the procession. The ancient tradition, which is still practised in present time, is believed to have started about 1000 years ago. These are traditionally led by a cow or by young men dressed in white with headgear depicting a cow. This festival is also marked with the mockery on the wrong doings of the politics and other concerned groups through the means of drama, music and other means of performance. This annual festival of commemorating the dead ones falls on the first day of the waning moon on Bhadra Shukla Pratipada and is mostly observed by Newari and Tharu communities of Nepal.

Unavailability of ambulance forces relative of pregnant woman to carry her on shoulders

Rayagada (Odisha), July 12, (ANI): In yet another case of apathy, relatives of a pregnant woman carried her on their shoulders due to unavailability of ambulance across the Nagabali river exposing the deteriorated health services in Odisha's Rayagada district. The relatives were left with no other option and they carried the woman on their shoulders with a stretcher for two km. Later, they found a mobile health vehicle of Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram in which the woman was taken to Kalyansinghpur community health centre (CHC) where she delivered a baby girl in the evening. Condition of the woman and her baby is stated to be stable.

Pregnant woman’s kin thrashes doctor after she dies of alleged negligence

Chhatarpur (MP), May 11 (ANI): A doctor in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur was brutally thrashed by the locals and relatives of a pregnant woman who died due to alleged negligence of the doctor. Expressing their anger, the locals vandalised the hospital property and clashed with the police officials who had come to control the situation. Giving details, a police official said several policemen and hospital staff have been injured in the mishap. A case has been registered in this regard and the injured were taken to another hospital for treatment.
